President Barack Obama

obama.jpg

Barack H. Obama is the 44th President of the United States.

His story is the American story — values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the conviction that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others.

FROM THE Co-CHAIR, Lisa Theo

I spent one week last month with 25 UWSP geography students in the Mississippi Delta. This was a wonderful trip where my students experienced a part of our country that most have not seen before. We toured Vicksburg National Battlefield. We ate BBQ ribs, fried catfish, pecan pralines, peach cobbler, and Delta Tamales.

We listened  to The Blues at B.B. King’s Club Ebony Juke Joint in Indianola and on Beale Street in Memphis. And, we watched the Badger Men’s Basketball team beat Indiana at Morgan Freeman’s “Ground Zero” Blues Club. We also met with students who are working with Teach for America through AmeriCorps in the Mississippi Delta. They told us of their experiences as young teachers in this region. One spoke about the lack of soap and broken windows in her elementary school’s bathrooms. Another told us about arriving in her classroom the first day to an empty room. She asked the principal “where are the desks?” The principal responded, “you can ask some of the other teachers if they might have any extra.” She then proceeded to collect whatever leftover furniture she could find. Still another was warned by his principal that he should not expect the students to have the basic materials such as pencils and paper – their families simply could not afford such extravagance. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence in most parts of The Delta. Mississippi schools continually rank near the bottom on most standard measures of education quality. Is this what awaits us under Scott Walker’s vision of Wisconsin?

Wisconsin has a tradition, a legacy of high-quality schools. We have been among the nations’ leaders in high school graduation rates, ACT scores, and teacher education. We have outstanding teachers, caring and dedicated support staff, and committed administrators who give their best every day for our children. We have excellent facilities where students can learn in a clean, safe environment. We have so much to be thankful for and so much to lose if Scott Walker continues his attacks on our schools and our unions. We need to continue our work to defeat Scott Walker. We need to continue to lead the nation in quality education. We don’t want to ever say Mississippi and Wisconsin have so much in common when it comes to education. It is too important.
